Open or Closed Office – What’s Right for You?

Many of you have heard the phrase ‘open plan office’ but do you really know what that means for your business? In today’s culture there are so many different options for your workspace and even more theories as to which office structure is best for your business, but at Larian we know the true secret: every business’s needs are unique.

So what’s the big deal about an open plan office?

Yes, it’s definitely more ‘modern’ and certainly utilised by many flashy start-ups, but is it right for your business? If your business success depends on your staff’s ability to work collaboratively then this may be the perfect answer!

An open office means that high cubicle walls and private offices aren’t utilised. This allows your staff to discuss projects easily and share their creative ideas. In addition to a collaborative environment and improved communication this is also an incredibly cost-effective solution as you are able to fit more employees in an open-office plan. And did we mention that with an open office plan, employees are less likely to spend their day on Facebook because everyone can see their computer screen.

 The benefits broken down:

  • Collaborative work environment
  • Cost-effective
  • Improved staff communication
  • Ensure staff remain on-task
  • Increased efficiency of air conditioning

But I really like a traditional closed office plan…

That’s okay! It’s your office and it all comes down to what works best for your business. A closed office plan has some great benefits that you won’t find with open office. The first is PRIVACY! Do you work on many confidential projects? If so, this by far is the best bet for you.  Your employees need the space and privacy to work without worrying if anyone is overhearing something they shouldn’t be.  In addition, your employees will have ability to work with minimal distractions and they won’t have to worry about all of their files and books encroaching on anyone else’s space. This allows individuals to create an environment that works for them because they don’t have to consider other staff’s preferences.

 The benefits broken down:

  • Privacy
  • Minimal distractions
  • Minimised clutter
  • More focused staff

In the end you have to decide what works best for your business, but you can’t decide until you know all your options. Considering a change in office layout but not sure which way to go?
